Health Visiting - Berkshire Health Foundation Trust

We provide support and advice to new parents in areas including breast-feeding, sleep, immunisation and teething

Our health visitors, who are all qualified nurses or midwives, are here to support and guide you and your family as your child grows up.

The below video will give you a brief outline as to what our health visitors do, how they can help you and how to contact them.

We provide you with practical support and health advice within your community with a focus on families and young children up to the age of five-years-old.

We are here to answer your questions and give advice on all sorts of topics including breast-feeding, sleep, immunisation and teething.

We work in various locations including your family home, children’s centres and GP surgeries.

During the first five years of your child’s life we:
• offer appointments to review your child’s health and progress
• offer advice and support

We also work with other agencies if you or a member of your family has special needs or a disability to offer you support, advice and information where special help may be needed.

Our teams are based in six areas across Berkshire:
• Slough
• Windsor, Ascot and Maidenhead
• Bracknell Forest
• Wokingham
• Reading
• West Berkshire (covering Hungerford/Kintbury/Lambourn/Woolton Hill, Newbury, Pangbourne, Thatcham and Theale)

We now have several advice videos available if you have problems with weaning.

The Health Visiting service has extended its duty line service, offering health advice relating to babies and children.

Referral Details

We are usually notified of all pregnancies and births from the midwife service and informed of all new families with under-fives registering with a GP in Berkshire.

However, parents and carers can also refer themselves to us.

If you are pregnant, we will contact you to introduce our service at about 28-weeks.

When you have had your baby, we will aim to visit you at home when your child is 14-days-old.

When we are informed that you have moved into the area, we will contact you within 10 working days to introduce our service.

You can also contact the health visiting service through the duty health visitor – telephone numbers are listed below.

We will usually make an appointment with you before coming to see you at home.

You may prefer to see us at one of the child health clinics in your area where no appointment is needed.

Other notes

Our service is here for all families with children under five-years-old who live in Berkshire.

Our health visiting team provides a professional service based on what works for your family, groups and communities and will work in partnership with you to keep your child healthy and safe.
